Why Wonder Girls are important
The Wonder Girls are coming to America and they are not doing it with cellular store autograph signings. These girls will be introduced to the screaming teeny bopping masses on the biggest stage in America when it comes to age 5-17 girls. If you dare underestimate the power that little girls have, just ask the Olsen twins and their billion dollar conglomerate.

I am a JYP fan. No, not just a fan of his protégés like Rain, g.o.d., and the Wonder Girls (even though I love all three), but I am a fan of him, Park Jin Young, the artist and person. I am not jumping on some band wagon just because he is doing really well these days… don’t get me started on how on-e of his first ballads is still my favorite song of all time or how on-e summer vacation in Korea my older cousins were forced to drive hours in addition to sneaking a very underaged fan (me) in to see him perform at a tiny countryside night club. So I will be the first to tell you that I may be a little biased when I say that what JYP is doing right now is very important.
나는 JYP의 팬이다. 단지 그의 제자들 비,지오디,원더걸스(내가 이 셋을 모두 사랑하긴 하지만)의 팬이 아니라, 아티스트와 한 인간으로서의 박진영의 팬이다. 박진영이 요즘 잘나가서 대세를 따르는게 아니다..... 어떻게 내가 가장좋아하는 노래가 그의 초기발라들중의 하나가 됬는지, 어떻게 어느 여름방학에 한국에서 사촌형과 몇시간을 운전해서 조그만 시골나이트 클럽에서 그것도 그가 공연하는 것을 엄청 나이어린 내가 몰래 구경했는지까지 말할 필요는 없을꺼 같다, JYP가 지금 하는 것들이
정말 중요하다고 말하면서 아마도 조금은 편향될수도 있다는것을 먼저 말하고 싶다,
I was at a Korean American festival a few years back when JYP introduced himself to a couple hundred 2nd generation Koreans before Rain’s performance. He told us that day that he was working on something really big, music and artists that we would want to share with our non-asian friends…something that he hoped would make us proud. Maybe it’s because JYP knows how it feels to be asian in America, after all he did spend substantial teenage years living here…but while everyone there at the time quietly dismissed his claims for a future asian music take over, it was hard to dismiss the sincerity in his voice.
내가 몇년전 한국계 미국인의 축제에 참가했을때 그는 비의 공연전에 수백명의 2세대 한국인에게 자신을 소개했다. 그날 박진영은 그가 굉장히 중요한 어떤일을 하고 있다는 것과 비아시아계 친구들과 우리가 공유하고 싶어하는 음악과 아티스트등에 얘기했고, 그가 희망했던것들은 우리를 자랑스럽게 했었다,.
아마도 박진영은 십대의 상당기간을 이곳 미국에서 보내면서 미국에서 아시안이라는것이 어떤것인 지를 느껴서 그랬던거 같다.
거기에 있던 모든 사람들은 아시아 음악이 지배할 미래에 대한 그의 주장을 완전히 잊어먹은것 같지만, 그의 목소리에 담겨있던 진심만은 잊기가 어렵다.
There are going to be plenty of people who question JYP’s motives. Money, fame, glory- sure, could all be part of it but I will venture to say that JYP is more than that. When I saw him that on-e summer, performing like a mad man in front of an audience of 20-30 disengaged club customers, he was someone who really loved what he did and appreciated the audience, however small of a number they were, however “useless” they were in the scheme of the whole “fame” thing.
많은 사람들이 JYP가 진짜 원하는게 뭘까를 궁금해한다. 돈,명성,영광, 물론 이 모든게 그가 바라는걸수도 있다, 하지만 나는 감히 JYP가 원하는 것은 그 이상의 무엇이라고 말하고 싶다, 어느 여름날 그가 미친사람처럼 20-30명의 자유로운 관객앞에서 미친듯이 공연하는 그를 봤을때, 박진영은 정말로 자기가 하는 것을 사랑하고 그 숫자가 아무리 작건, 명성이라는 면에서 보면 아무런 소용도 없는 관객에게라도 정말로 감사하는 그런 사람이었다,
Well wishes for the Wonder Girls as they set off to conquer America later this month are not without reservations, and rightfully so. While the Wonder Girls are talented performers, very cute, and hard working, is there a chance that their talent and personalities could be lost in translation? yes. Should their english be better at this point before jumping off the cliff? of course. Could they fail in stirring prolonged interest outside of Asia? yes.
이달말에 미국을 정복하려는 첫걸음을 내딛는 원더걸스의 희망이 쉽게 이루어질까, 당연히 아니다. 원더걸스가 재능있는 가수고, 엄청 귀여우며, 열심히 노력하긴 하지만, 미국화되는 과정에서 그들의 재능과 개성을 잃을수도 있는거 아닌가? 물론 그럴수 있다, 벼랑에서 막 뛰어내리려고 하는 이시점에 영어실력을 더 키워야 하는거 아닌가? 물론 그렇다. 그들이 아시아 바깥에서 지속적인 열광적 관심을 끌지 못할수도 있는것 아닌가? - 그럴수있다,
But in every new cultural movement, there has to be frontrunners. If these girls are the beginning of asians becoming more preval!ent in global media, popular arts, and entertainment industry… what they are doing, what they are attempting, is very important.
하지만 모든 새로운 문화적인 변화에는, 항상 선구자가 있어야만 한다, 만약 이소녀들이 전세계적으로 미디어와 대중예술,엔터테인먼트 산업계에서 아시아인들이 더욱 도약하기 시작하는 시발점이라고 한다면, 그들이 하고있는것, 그들이 시도하려고 하는것은 너무나도 중요하다.
While some fans of JYP and the Wonder girls would rather that they stay in Asia where there is no chance of failure, for me it comes down to this:
비록 JYP와 원더걸스의 일부 팬들은 실패가능성이 없는 아시아에서 활동하는 것이 더 낫다고 말하지만, 나는 이렇게 생각한다,
I think it’s pretty dang cool that my seven year old cousin who idolizes Hannah Montana and the Jonas brothers will be able to see a group of girls that look like her confidently share a stage in America with her favorite idols. When I was her age, I never could have imagined anything like that possible. If these young Wonder Girls are willing to be among the first to take that bold and scary step, then I say let’s get behind them and cheer them on… loudly.
한나몬태나와 조나스브라더스를 숭배하는 내 일곱살먹은 조카가 자기를 닮은 한 소녀 그룹이 걔가 가장좋아하는 우상과 미국에서 당당하게 같은 무대에 서는 모습을 볼수 있다는 것만 생각해도 진짜 너무나 기분이 좋다, 내가 내 조카 나이때는 나는 그런게 가능하리라고는 생각조차 못했다, 이 어린 원더걸스가 대담하고도 두려운 걸음을 내딛는 선구자중 한명이 되려고 한다면, 나는 소리높여 말하고 싶다. 그녀들의 뒤에서 그들을 응원하자고...
